On January 17th, 2026, PICU HTAKL in Malaysia hosted a Non-Invasive Ventilation (NIV) Workshop featuring clinical lectures and hands-on skill stations focused on pediatric respiratory care.

We were honoured to be invited by Dr Ooi Li Lyn and Dr Aznor Fadly bin Azim to support the hands-on component of the workshop.

Our team assisted at the skills station focused on circuit and interface, supporting practical setup flow during station rotations.

Special thanks to:

  • Dr Maira for assisting our team during the station session
  • MA Fadzli for coordinating and overseeing the session

Programme Highlights

Below are the topics:

  • Paediatric respiratory anatomy & physiology

  • Indications and contraindications of NIV

  • Oxygen support and HFNC

  • NIV setup and troubleshooting

  • Hands-on workshop stations with group rotations

Equipment Supported: Philips Trilogy EV300

The Philips Trilogy EV300 ventilator was used in the hands-on session for practical familiarisation on NIV setup, circuit configuration, and interface handling.

The Philips Trilogy EV300 is a portable ventilator designed to support both non-invasive ventilation (NIV) and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV) across a wide patient range, including paediatric patients from ≥2.5 kg, subject to configuration and clinical decision-making. It features an 8-inch touchscreen interface with guided navigation to support clinical workflows in hospital environments.

It is commonly used in critical care areas such as ICU and PICU, supporting continuity of respiratory care within the hospital, where both NIV and invasive ventilation may be required as patient needs evolve.

Clinician discussions at the skills station focused on practical aspects such as

  • Circuit selection and correct assembly (single- or dual-limb, where applicable)
  • Interface considerations and setup checks during NIV sessions
  • Awareness of alarms and basic ventilation monitoring parameters in routine clinical use

Why Hands-On NIV Workshops Matter

Hands-on NIV workshops provide opportunities for clinician-led learning and knowledge exchange, helping participants translate theoretical concepts into practical clinical workflows. These sessions typically support:

  • NIV setup and basic troubleshooting
  • Team coordination during ventilation setup and monitoring
  • Familiarity with circuit and interface handling in a structured environment

FAQ

What is the difference between NIV and invasive mechanical ventilation (IMV)?

NIV provides ventilatory support without an invasive airway, while IMV requires an endotracheal tube or tracheostomy. The choice depends on clinical indication, patient condition, and care plan.

Is the Philips Trilogy EV300 a portable hospital ventilator?

The Philips Trilogy EV300 is a portable hospital ventilator designed for use across different care areas within the hospital, including critical care settings. It is equipped with internal and detachable batteries, providing up to 15 hours of battery operation to support use during intra-hospital transport.

What parameters can the Trilogy EV300 monitor?

When used with appropriate accessories, the Trilogy EV300 can measure, display, record, and alarm parameters such as SpO₂, FiO₂, CO₂, respiratory rate, and pulse rate, supporting routine clinical monitoring in hospital environments.

What should hospitals consider when selecting a ventilator?

When selecting a hospital ventilator, common considerations include intended clinical use (NIV, invasive ventilation, or both), patient population, care setting (ICU, PICU, transport), workflow compatibility, monitoring requirements, and availability of service and technical support.
