We were pleased to participate in the Paediatric Intensive Care Masterclass 2025 at Sunway Medical Centre, held in collaboration with the Malaysian Society of Intensive Care.
This hands-on workshop focused on improving respiratory care in paediatric and neonatal settings.
We showcased two hospital-based respiratory systems:
- Lifotronic PV-100 High-Frequency Chest Wall Oscillation (HFCWO) System
- Philips Trilogy EV300 Ventilator
Hands-On Learning for Paediatric Airway and Ventilatory Support
During the workshop, doctors and nurses took part in live demonstrations to better understand how both systems are used in clinical settings – especially for managing airway clearance and ventilation in infants and children with secretion retention or respiratory distress.
They also had the chance to try the HFCWO vest themselves, gaining firsthand experience of how the therapy works and integrates into ICU routines.
We sincerely thank Dr Jaclyn, Prof Anis, Dr Michelle, Dr Olive Lee, and Dr Cheong Ching Yee for their kind support and collaboration throughout the session.
Lifotronic PV-100 HFCWO – Airway Clearance Therapy for Young Patients
The Lifotronic PV-100 HFCWO System delivers gentle, high-frequency oscillations through an inflatable vest to help loosen mucus in the lungs and move it toward the upper airway, where it can be cleared by coughing or suctioning.
Using variable frequency and pressure settings, the system creates small bursts of airflow – sometimes described as “mini-coughs”- that help mobilise secretions from deep within the lungs.
This therapy is suitable for patients as young as 3 months old, particularly those who have difficulty coughing out mucus on their own.
It is commonly used in the management of secretion retention related to:
- Cystic fibrosis
- Bronchiectasis
- Post-operative respiratory recovery
- Neuromuscular disorders
- Other conditions with secretion retention
How HFCWO Supports Respiratory Care in PICU:
- Mobilises sputum from deeper airways to assist natural clearance
- Reduces physical strain compared to manual CPT and percussion
- Can be used multiple times daily without causing rib or muscle discomfort
- Reduces the risk of complications associated with secretion buildup
- Comfortable and well-tolerated, even in young or fragile patients
- Passive therapy – the vest does the work while the patient sits, rests, or lies down, making it especially suitable for babies and young children.
Philips Trilogy EV300 – Ventilatory Support Across Paediatric Care
Philips Trilogy EV300 is a portable ventilator designed to support a wide range of patients, from infants (≥2.5 kg) to adults. It provides both non-invasive and invasive ventilation. Its portability and versatility make it well-suited for various hospital settings.
How the Trilogy EV300 Supports Hospital Teams
- Touchscreen interface with simplified navigation for ease of use
- Real-time alarms and patient monitoring when integrated with compatible accessories
- Flexible ventilation modes to support a variety of clinical protocols
- Enables consistent ventilatory support throughout different stages of patient care
This system helps streamline ventilation workflows while supporting patient care in fast-paced, multidisciplinary settings.
